"awfully simplistic"? No, it's right on target. Cadillac was the innovator in luxury cars with a device known as the electric starter, which eliminated the crank.

Apple's innovation is, in my mind at least (and I am a long time Apple user, starting with the Apple II+, 8 Macintosh models beginning with the first one in 1984, and an iPod Touch), its user friendly operating systems. Android running on Snapdragon seems to be at least good competition for Apple's user friendly OS, and better in some ways.

The real blow to an iPhone, however, would be a competing smart phone with Mirasol display.
