I never previously purchased bullion coins in gold. However, I recently purchased as gifts 10 one grams bars. [I hate to call something that small a "bar."] The premium was substantial compared to the alternatives so I would never recommend these as investments. "Junk" coins are so much more a bargain while serving the same purpose of preserving wealth, although they lack the glitz of shiny bright coins or "bars."

I agree with your observation too, particularly in regards to rare or collector coins as investment, though collecting as a hobby is another matter. The market values of rare or collector coins is based on changing whims among collectors and the values on selected issues can swing wildly up and down. And the absolutely worst place to buy is from TV marketers who seem to offer attractive prices, but then add overpriced shipping charges. ...better to buy the same thing on eBay or Amazon with free shipping. I've bought odd lots of graded and ungraded silver coins that way and never been unhappy with the purchases (though I am cautious about the seller's customer ratings and history).
