ALERT: SKVY RUMORED TO BE A PRESENTER

Passenger Terminal EXPO 2001 Florida offers airport industry directors and technical managers an important and timely meeting opportunity to discuss the latest circumstances affecting airport operations in the US and worldwide...

15, 16, 17 October 2001 Florida, USA

Following the unprecedented events of September 2001, there are important additions and changes to the originally published conference program. On day one, Monday 15th October 2001, a major presentation will be staged by the US Army Soldier and Biological Chemical Command Homeland Defense Business Unit dealing with Weapons of Mass Destruction Preparedness. The presentation, which will be made jointly by James Genovese and Mary Doak, will include a full review of chemical and biological agent detection, hazard mitigation and emergency actions, training of personnel to recognise chemical and biological agent dissemination devices and a review of near and far-term solutions. The two hour presentation will include practical guidelines in relation to training exercises, and improved response planning. Plenty of time will be allowed for questions from the audience.

The opening discussion will be augmented by another extensive review from Billie H. Vincent, former chairman of FAA, AVSEC, who will present actions that are required to be taken divided into immediate, mid-term and longer-term requirements. His review will cover the immediate need to implement enhanced baggage screening and management of carry-on articles, the need to Federalize the aviation security screening workforce and requirement to develop rigorous training programs, together with an assessment of longer term responses such as the provision of ballistic protection for cockpit bulkheads and floors and for selected vital components as well as the need to integrate law enforcement/intelligence databases into aviation security systems.

A further addition to the program will be made by Shabbir Merchant, President of ETC Simulation, who will be illustrating how simulation and virtual reality can be used for training in relation to disaster management and emergency public incident coordination. This will be augmented by the arrangement of visits to ETCís headquarters, around 30 minutes drive from the convention centre where delegates can gain first hand experience of relevant simulated environments.

Many of our originally scheduled speakers have proposed changed or amended discussions. Terry Palmer of Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire, the structural engineers who designed the World Trade Center will illustrate just how extraordinary the original building concept was by way of its ability to remain standing long enough to enable many thousands of people to flee to their safety. Buildings alone though will ultimately have their limitations, so the real issue in hand comes back to preventing such an attack from occurring. Experts including Ed Galea of the UKís Greenwich University will be talking about evacuation and smoke modelling in large buildings while others will discuss specific technologies for enhancing safety and security.

Managing Director of Passenger Terminal Expo Tony Robinson says "we all hope that the staging of this event will create a timely meeting point for airport and aviation industry managers to talk with architects and security experts in a highly productive way. There is a massive global resolve to prevent another terrorist outrage and there are clearly emergency measures needed as well as longer term responses. My hope is that despite the economic limitations and pressures affecting airport management teams, that those directly concerned with these issues will find the time to be with us. There is a spirit of solidarity from our speakers and delegates around the world to make this not just a conference but a truly practical working environment to help fight the war against terrorism".

Passenger Terminal Expo is organised by UK & International Press, publisher of Passenger Terminal World magazine.

Passenger Terminal Expo is the world’s premier Exhibition and Conference concerned exclusively with current and future passenger terminal design and management. Visitors from six continents and 65 countries attended the 2001 event in Cannes, France, including all major airports, airlines, architectural/consulting engineering companies and airport authorities.

Passenger Terminal Expo is delighted to be returning to the USA and is pleased to announce our co-operation with the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, the Airport Consultants Council (ACC) and Delta Air Lines.
