Delta Flight Diverted to Louisiana
SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A Delta airliner bound for California was diverted to Shreveport, La., with an escort of two fighter planes today after a passenger passed a threatening note to a flight attendant, the FBI said. Delta spokeswoman Cindi Kurczewski said there were 139 passengers and nine crew members aboard the jetliner traveling from Atlanta to Los Angeles. Edward A. Stephenson, 36, was arrested and charged with interfering with a flight crew member and attendants, FBI spokeswoman Sheila Thorne said. Full Story
Third Florida Anthrax Case Found
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Federal authorities said today that a third person has been exposed to anthrax and the case has become the subject of a criminal investigation. ``There is another individual that has tested positive for presence of the virus,'' U.S. Attorney Guy Lewis. The 35-year-old woman, whose name wasn't released, has been hospitalized and is being treated with antibiotics. Her condition was immediately known. Lewis said authorities are now conducting a criminal probe into the source of the anthrax, which killed a man last week and was found in the nasal passages of a co-worker. Full Story News Photo
U.S. Jets Attack Afghan Targets
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - U.S. aircraft returned to the skies over Afghanistan early Thursday, blasting sites near Kabul airport with at least six heavy-detonation projectiles that lit up the night sky. Taliban gunners returned fire with anti-aircraft weapons. In the biggest attack so far against Kabul, U.S. jets pounded the Afghan capital on Wednesday. NATO Pilots to Guard U.S. Skies
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - European pilots will help protect U.S. skies for the first time starting Friday, flying five AWACS planes that are being deployed to Tinker Air Force base from a NATO base in Germany. ``They will be defending the homeland, flying combat air patrol,'' Air Force Capt. Steven Rolenc said. The Airborne Warning and Control Systems aircraft are used to monitor battles on the ground or threats in the air. U.S. pilots will also be involved in the air patrols. Europe Asked to Look for Terrorists
WASHINGTON (AP) - Investigators are asking European police agencies to look out for eight suspected terrorists linked to Osama bin Laden. The hunt for the eight comes amid heightened concerns about terrorist attacks against American targets in the United States and abroad. The alert went out via Interpol, an international policing agency. President Bush announced a list of 22 ``most-wanted'' terrorists, which included bin Laden and several people linked to the 19 hijackers who crashed planes into the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon. White House Warns on Terror Tapes
WASHINGTON (AP) - Suspicious that Osama bin Laden is using American TV to send coded messages, the White House asked the networks today to think twice before airing his terrorist organization's videotaped messages. ``At best, this is a forum for prerecorded, pre-taped propaganda inciting people to kill Americans,'' White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said. Following a conference call with National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and Fox agreed they would not broadcast transmissions from bin Laden's al-Qaida group without first screening and possibly editing them.
