I was watching CNBC one day last year (I believe) when they were showing some Greenspan hearing at the capitol. Senators were in full genuflect until Ernest Hollings gets up there and in his best southern puffery asks Greenspan if it wasn't true that even with the surplus "wasn't the federal gubmint spending more than it takes in?" After much gnashing of teeth it was admitted that that was true. Now I'm no accountant but perhaps we should be on the lookout for "new era" accounting on all levels <gg>.
