These volumes are not due to individual investors trading. Institutions are selling and shorting and it's mostly automated by sophisticated charting and AI software programs. The individual investor is busy at work and the greater percentage of online individual traders are doing it through the ECN's and they are shorting the hell out of the indexes to be sure. The vast majority of individuals are not online traders and are getting shafted by the hype about internet and tech stocks. It' s their choice to buy, but who's been pushing these stocks? Sure hasn't been word of mouth. Cash is king right now. Keep those paychecks from getting burned away ! ;-)
