Yes, Steve. The "shotgun blasts", as you put it, are for settings such as when a preacher is speaking to a crowd of people who are there to hear the sermon.

Not every (or many) encounters with people are occasions for sermons.

Even when it is an occassion for a sermon, remember Eutychus. (Acts 20:9)
