Gold is a heavily manipulated commodity, and the gold-mining stocks are very closely tied to the price of the commodity. I've made good money a couple of times trading gold stocks, but it's really tough because the price of gold moves more on rumor and market manipulation than on the macroeconomic or microeconomic fundamentals. I wouldn't recommend tying up capital in the mining companies unless you know what the institutions have planned for the commodity and can time your trades accordingly. The last big opportunity in gold was when the short position became so immense (gold-carry trades, mining-company hedging) that the commodities desk at Goldman Sachs couldn't resist a short squeeze.
