Actually, the Muslim community in the US hasn't been all that silent. The general media have not played up the stories that are available showing their support, however.
In particular, one imam in DC has publicly stated that he will no longer preach anti-US rhetoric because he never assumed listeners would misconstrue it to mean it was OK to attack and kill. His sermons were (not unlike Catholic Fundamentalist sermons I've heard) aimed at unacceptable behavior on the part of US citizens (porn, abortion, etc.) and the fact that our government does nothing to stop it.
Generally, Islam doesn't adhere to the Western concept that Church and State are separate entities. However, most of them (in the US) recognize that differences of opinion require the freedom to be able to exercise varied beliefs, and preach as they see fit.
OTOH, I agree that it is disheartening to hear the deafening silence of Farrakhan and his ilk. Their immediate reaction (I checked their website) after 10/11 was to call for preparedness for attacks on Muslims in the US. Of course, it was the usual scaremongering. While there have been isolated events - it's clear most people in the US remain tolerant.
By the way, in response to Charles....I don't trust anyone in particular. Not the military, not the government, but least of all the media. I'll give the first two the benefit of the doubt. I can usually read between the lines in their statements because they are all statements that are designed to promote a particular standpoint. The media, however, is full of low IQ dunderheads who continually pass themselves off as experts on whatever the flavor of the day is. Gee...that sounds like alot of senators too. |
