I don't know. But if it is the former, I wouldn't be too concerned, since it seems the "VHS vs. Beta" war of instruction sets seems to be leaning towards Intel's favor. I hardly know of any software that brags about using the "Athlon New Instructions." (Remember that Athlon added some more 3DNow! instructions, and they were deemed a "match" for Intel's SSE.)

As for the structure of Willamette's FPU, I guess I'll have to wait for the MPR article to see what it looks like and how it compares to Athlon. I doubt Willamette used the same brute-force strategy toward floating-point as Merced did.
