CBoyGaugs -- Wow, memory lane trippin'! I hail from ruralia too, and the gravel roads - sittin here with my eyes closed I can smell the tar. Shot 'n chip, they called it, always applied in the dead heat of summer so the gravel could get shoved in REAL good, and the tar didn't congeal for a week. So for the first coupla days you had gravel chattering through the undercarriage, tar spots all over the car (washed 'em off with gasoline, .22/gallon or less) and don't even talk about trying to ride a bike to the neighbors' houses; hadda walk.

Then after the gravel had set in, the sun would find those little pools and puddles of leftover tar and bubble it up. Our job was to take sticks and bust those bubbles so's we had nice sticky tar to smear on each other. Summer didn't start until those tar bubbles started to form.
