freeus, some points to remember about Lynch's advice:

1. His heyday was pre- internet. Our information resources are much more robust and accessible than they were pre-1995.
2. His experience was during a time when technology was not the growth engine of our economy. Consumer products drove the economy, along with the defense industry. Even technology (PCs) were predominantly consumer products.
3. His advice was out of the context of the opportunities we have today. There was no internet infrastructure buildout in process. The PC was not a household appliance creating whole new business models.
4. He was managing other people's money, and tons of it. You and I are managing our own money.
