Krispy Kreme retail outlets in Wal-Mart stores to close Winston-Salem Journal Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. said yesterday that it is discontinuing its test program of opening retail outlets in Wal-Mart stores. Amy Hughes, Krispy Kreme's communications director, said that the company will close six outlets in Wal-Mart stores around the country as of Sunday, including those in Mount Airy and Charlotte. Hughes said that the company and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. made the decision that the concept was not viable at this time. Krispy Kreme doughnuts will still be sold in Wal-Mart stores as part of Krispy Kreme's wholesale business. Company officials said last year that the outlets could give the company significant growth opportunities if the concept took off. Sales at Krispy Kreme have slumped over the past year.
