IMO, the DOW needs to descend to the same level down as the rest of the market before this is over. That means maybe down into the mid-6000s. Everything will drop with it, but not proportionally. Quality small caps (no debt, good earnings) will kick butt when the recovery begins. Everyone is predicting 6400 as the low for the DOW. IMO, unless the world-as-we-know-it comes to an end, we will not reach this level since it is the agreed upon bottom and no one want to be the one to sell at "the bottom". Also, another 1000 point drop all of a sudden brings valuation in line with historical norms (I think).

Furthermore, lets say this slowdown is going to last for 18 months (severe). The stock market runs about 6 months ahead of the economy (which is why it is a leading economic indicator). The markets have officially sucked for 3 months (for some of us it has sucked since May). The stock market usually turns around at the bottom of the recession -- so I say we've got another 6 - 8 months of neutral to grim conditions.

Just my thoughts,
Chris
