New York--Jan. 29--Worldwide shipments of personal computers rose 15%, to 27.3 million, during the fourth quarter of 1998,
International Data Corp. said today. Preliminary estimates from the computer-tracking company also place total 1998 world shipments at 89.9 million, up 12% from 80.3 million in 1997. Computer giant Compaq led the way, shipping more computers during the fourth quarter and all of 1998 than any other computer manufacturer.
IDC said Compaq shipped 13.3 million computers in 1998, accounting for 14.8% of all shipments. It was the only manufacturer with market share higher than 10%. IBM's 1998 world market share was 8.8%, followed by Dell at 8.5%, Hewlett-Packard at 6.4%, and Packard Bell NEC at 4.2%. All other vendors accounted for 57.3% of the world's shipments. The top three computer makers retained their respective positions for the fourth quarter, although IDC said IBM "struggled for most of the year, but finished on a high note," indicating new sales momentum.
Meanwhile, Gateway made big market-share gains in the U.S., moving from No. 6 in 1997 to No. 3 in 1998, surpassing IBM in the process. Compaq held the top spot in U.S. shipments for the entire fiscal year, but IDC said Dell halved Compaq's market-share lead with a 56% increase in shipments, compared with a 16% increase for Compaq. Total shipments in the U.S. during the fourth quarter and all of 1998 were 10.8 million and 36.2 million, respectively, showing that U.S. customers still buy about 40% of the world's personal computers.
