Young reporters must first persuade their editors to run their story. While I have been seeing occasional stories on the paper's web sites about DHEC, they are few and far between. The typical story is about DHEC allowing pollution to continue instead of trying to stop it. What you don't see are articles about businesses driven away by DHEC. That is far less interesting in print.

We used to discuss on this thread the potential of GRNO employing skilled tradespeople laid off by government bases around Charleston. The official unemployment rate is very low now so there will be less public concern about DHEC driving away employers. Of course, that number reflects the fact that there are no longer a large number of people drawing unemployment benefits which could mean they have left the area or are working in retail around Charleston rather than working their better paying craft.

As far as changing DHEC is concerned, I have been told by somebody in the Columbia Sierra Club that legislation has been written that will affect DHEC and will introduced in the SC legislature in the 1999 session.
