Apple to show prototype copper-based PowerPC

By Ron Wilson

NEW YORK - Apple Computer Inc. is preparing to demonstrate the
first CPU built in copper-metalization technology, sources have told EE
Times. At the Seybold Seminars scheduled for March 16-20 in New
York, Apple's interim chief executive officer, Steve Jobs, will show a
Macintosh computer running at 400-MHz with a prototype PowerPC chip
from IBM Microelectronics, according to industry insiders.

The demonstration not only represents a step forward in Macintosh
performance, but also the emergence of a delicate political problem for
Apple. The company has struggled to maintain good relationships with both
IBM and Motorola, the suppliers of PowerPC processors. But a gap is
opening between the process capabilities IBM and Motorola as IBM's
copper-metalization process comes on line, insiders said. Such a gap could
make it difficult if not impossible for Motorola to continue as an alternate
source of high-end PowerPC CPUs.
