They need their own Bill Clinton to lead the effort to re-learn that electoral success lies in going beyond the base, not playing turtle inside it.

My history of the Dem party may be different from yours, but mine says that Mondale was the lesson, that Dukakis ran on competence not liberalism (though the Bush folk successfully painted him as such), and the DNC (with Clinton as one of the public faces) had intense internal disagreements over precisely the purity issue. They were never terribly comfortable with Clinton because he tried to triangulate between the DNC and the rest of the party.
