He is deliberately confusing and conmingling the distinct opinions/motivations of:
1. Americans about the war on Afghanistan
2. Americans about the war on Iraq, and
3. non-Americans


I've noticed this same rhetorical strategy, not only in Schlesinger's appearances on PBS but you can pick it up all over. And if you point out, as you just did, that there were no widespread, for instance, protests against Afghan in the US, two kinds of replies usually appear. One finds an obscure demonstration and says you are wrong. Choosing to ignore "widespread." Or a second says, I didn't mean US, I meant the rest of the world. So it's not about serious opinion; it's only about spinning, about the political character of talk. One of the several reasons I no longer take Schlesinger seriously.
