Well the Election is over! – Change won…. As I sat last night watching the results, I like you, had some observations. As I watched President Elect Obama deliver a wonderful speech to his massed well wishers. I could not help but draw some comparisons.
It has been some time since we had a President who could inspire such outreach, and massed celebrations in so many cities including Seattle, where the crowd took over some downtown streets. These events happen only at times of great “Change” that word again. It happened during the election of only certain Presidents; Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Reagan – and now Obama. Each was elected following a period of great threat, or economic stress in America, and like an earthquake relieves stress, so do these very special elections.
What a relief it was to listen to a President who can speak such wonderful words and make us all believe in hope and change. The last President who could do so was President Reagan, and most of Obama supporters were not born during his term of office, and those of us on the other side were looking for a Reagan, and that, McCain was not. But McCain was the honest caudate in this contest – anyone who goes to Iowa and says he will stop the subsidies for Ethanol because it’s a sham, is not pandering for votes, and he lost Iowa. What he did not have was youth!
The crowd, flags, staging and choreographed evening – felt like, and reminded me of films we have all seen of Hitler’s mass rallies’ (I do not mean in any manner to connect the two in any way). The pushing thong, the tears, admiration, the music and did you note the “Search Lights” forming a cover over the event, just like the wonderfully staged massed rallies in Germany during the 30’s, you were draw in, and lifted up at the moment. It has the feel of the great Leni Riefenstahl films of the Hitler rallies and speeches.
I can remember my Kansas born, German Mother, telling me of the mystical, magic of Hitler’s voice and speeches, and yes also the evil. Obama has the same ability of speech and voice – a gift to motivate, lead and inspire.
Choreographed it was (not a bad thing) – the President Elect giving an uplifting speech – the First Lady entering from stage left a few moments later, then the children, followed by family members – then the Vice President etc. All timed and choreographed to keep emotions high and extend the positive feeling – it was a “feel good moment”!
But with the Hitler’s mass rallies – the public did not see the dark side, the danger that was already infecting their country and people. For the same reason you did not see Nancy or Harry on stage last night – they were behind the curtain. Only today when you heard Nancy’s call for a “Lame Duck” Session of Congress – and her aims and goals - should a chill have run up your back.
There is no doubt that a new generation is in charge, and has brought about “Change” – let us pray it will be the right change! |
