Digital Microwave Completes 155-Mbps Fixed Wireless Access Rollout With European Availability of Altium 38-GHz Radio
Already Successfully Deployed in the U.S., First Wireless Solution of Its Kind At 38-GHz Addresses Rapidly Growing Broadband Access Market in Europe
ATLANTA, June 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital Microwave Corporation (Nasdaq: DMIC - news), one of the world's foremost solutions providers for broadband wireless access, today announced that its award-winning Altium(TM) broadband fixed wireless access products now conform to European telecommunications standards for 155-Mbps wireless solutions in the high-capacity 38-GHz radio frequency band. The wireless products have passed the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) qualification tests, enabling shipments to begin to European customers and other markets where the ETSI regulations are observed.
Digital Microwave (DMC), which will change its company name to DMC Stratex Networks in August, is an independent wireless solutions provider with a leading market share in the broadband fixed wireless access and mobile wireless solutions markets. The industry-leading Altium and DMC's other wireless access solutions will be on display at Supercomm in its booth No. 6645 during the show this week.
Already deployed throughout the U.S., and now available in Europe, the 38-GHz Altium one-of-a-kind solution is designed to meet the most stringent requirements of ultra-high-speed wireless access networks. Altium is the highest-speed, most spectrally efficient wireless access solution shipping today. It uses 128 QAM modulation to deliver 155-Mbps wireless fiber-like capacity in only 28-MHz of radio frequency bandwidth, half that of other available wireless products. This efficiency allows wireless-based service providers to dedicate less of their licensed spectrum for installed systems, providing for the best dollars-per-Mbps-per-MHz metric today.
DMC has received Altium orders at a record-setting pace, and the solution has proven to be the most successfully launched product in the company's 16-year history. Altium product line revenue in FY2000, which ended March 31, 2000, was more than $47 million for the year and $18 million for Q4. Included in these results were orders by major U.S. CLECs.
``Demand for high-capacity wireless solutions is growing on a worldwide basis, and we're pleased to make our 38-GHz Altium 155-Mbps product available to our customers in global markets,'' said Sam Smookler, DMC president and CEO. ``At 155-Mbps, Altium is one of the fastest solutions shipping today for delivering data, voice and video communications.''
Altium's reliability has tested to be better than fiber, and the ring or hot-standby configurations allow for a high degree of path protection. Wireless has the advantage over laying fiber cables in saving installation time as well, and it is the only option for delivering the necessary capacity in many areas where laying fiber is impractical and cost prohibitive.
Altium is now available in the 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18, 23, 24, 26, 28, 31 and 38-GHz radio frequency bands, so providers can now roll out the diverse wireless access applications customers need using one platform.
With headquarters in San Jose, Calif., Digital Microwave is one of the world's foremost solutions providers for broadband wireless access -- enabling the development of complex communications networks worldwide. Since its founding in 1984, the Company has achieved international recognition for quality, innovation and technical superiority in delivering data, voice and video communication systems, including comprehensive service and support. Continuing its focus on the wireless broadband networking market, DMC is strategically positioned to continue its solutions-based leadership in wireless high-capacity transmission technology.
