John,

I understand why Dems are mad at Lieberman and can understand the immediate reaction to throw him under the bus. But to me, it makes no sense to throw him away if he really wants to caucus with the Dems. He doesn't have to get any plum positions but why would you want to push him to the other side? He agrees with the Dems on most issues except backing McCain and the Iraq war. The McCain issue is a moot point right now. I would hope that the Democratic party's tent is big enough to have someone under it that is for the Iraq war.

In fact, bringing Lieberman over might be a way to get someone like a McCain or Hagel or some other moderate more to the Democratic side and allow them to get by with some of their legislative agenda. The moderates in the Republican party, and I do think McCain is really one of them(he just couldn't run in the election that way and it really hurt him) could be very helpful for the Democrats during Obama's term. From the sounds of things, McCain has no love for the radical part of the Republican party and he has less reason to try to be beholden to them since it would be very unlikely that he would need them since it would be very unlikely he would be given another chance at the Republican nomination.

I thought this whole election was about building coalitions and bridges, not blowing them up.

Neal
