(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2001--IDG World Expo, the leading
producer of world-class tradeshows, conferences and events for IT markets, announced today that Eric
Lander, PhD, director of the Whitehead Institute/MIT's Center for Genome Research and leading
contributor to the Human Genome Project, will present the opening keynote address at BioITWorld
Conference & Expo.
The first event of its kind to address the convergence of life sciences and technology, BioITWorld
will be launched at Boston's World Trade Center, March 12-14, 2002. BioITWorld visionaries will bring
together, for the first time, leading academic and industry scientists to reveal how state-of-the-art
bioinformatics technologies are transforming the life sciences throughout the entire discovery and
development processes.
The enormous amount of information produced in the life science discovery process is fueling
demand for advanced IT solutions and data-intensive analysis. According to industry analyst firm IDC,
IT spending within the bioscience market is expected to grow from $4 billion in 2001 to more than $11
billion in 2004. BioITWorld will be the first industry event to educate life science professionals about IT
solutions for the entire process of drug discovery and development.
"With biology becoming an increasingly information-based science, it is timely for us to discuss the
issues surrounding this space," said Dr. Lander, who is also a Professor of Biology at MIT. "I look
forward to an active discussion with my distinguished peers on the exciting future directions of these
intersecting fields."
Dr. Lander's opening keynote presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, 2001 at 9 a.m.
The BioITWorld conference program will include a series of IT symposia, technology workshops,
product and industry award programs, and peer-to-peer networking activities. The event will also
feature a Bioinformatics Hands-On Laboratory, an opportunity for attendees to "test drive" IT solutions.
In addition, the expo floor will showcase advanced computational technologies as well as special
programs for biotech start-ups.
As a Rhodes Scholar and MacArthur Foundation Prize Fellowship in genetics recipient, Dr. Lander
and his research group have developed many of the tools of modern genome research, including
genomic maps of the human, mouse and rat genomes. These tools of genetic analyses have been
applied to the understanding of cancer, diabetes, hypertension, renal failure, and dwarfism. Dr. Lander
was elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 1997, the U.S. Institute of Medicine in 1998
and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999, and has been awarded numerous prestigious
medical prizes including the Rhodes Prize in Cancer and the Woodrow Wilson Prize for Public Service
from Princeton University.
Dr. Lander also serves on BioIT World's advisory board, which includes industry leaders Dr. Lee
Jensen, Bio.com; Dr. Rainer Fuchs, Biogen; Dr. Jim Golden, CuraGen;bold Dr. Tony Frudakis, DNAPrint
Genomics, Inc.bold; Dr. George J. Maalouf, Genomix; David Valenta, Hewlett Packard; Dr. Caroline
Kovack, IBM Life Sciences; Debra Goldfarb, IDC; Mark Weitner, Parabon Computation; Andrew
Kelly, Platform Computing; and Dr. Rich Hamer, Viaken.
According to Inna Kuznetsova, worldwide integrated marketing communications manager at IBM
Life Sciences, a BioITWorld exhibitor and Platinum Sponsor, BioITWorld will help the scientists share
experience and adopt the best new technologies for the lab, which will result in new drugs in the pipeline
faster, as well as help IT vendors to gain insights for designing next-generation technologies for life
sciences industries. "By bringing the life sciences research and IT community together," says Ms.
Kuznetsova, "BioITWorld sets a new stage for a discussion about utilizing computer technology to turn
data into drug discovery."
"We are proud to have the support and guidance of the foremost minds in biotechnology for our
premiere BioITWorld Conference & Expo," said Charlie Greco, president and CEO of IDG World
Expo. "As the first industry event of its kind, this show will bring together the leaders that will shape the
future of this emerging sector."
