US calls for immediate Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank The United States has demanded the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian-controlled areas of the West Bank. It has deplored their killing of Palestinian civilians over the weekend. The State Department also wants Yasser Arafat to act against those responsible for the assassination of Israel's tourist minister. Department spokesman Philip Reeker said: "Israel Defence Forces should be withdrawn immediately from all Palestinian-controlled areas and no further such incursions should be made." He says they have made it clear to Chairman Arafat and the Palestinian Authority that they must act immediately to arrest all those responsible for the assassination of Rehavam Zeevi. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine has taken responsibility for Zeevi's murder. Its military wing has been outlawed by the Palestine National Council.
