I have a more cynical point of view, which, by the way, IS supported by the debates concerning the militia -- they pointed out that in England, the militia was suppressed by first disarming them, which they considered to be a great evil.

An armed citizenry is the best protection against government oppression -- the debates actually support this construction.

Whenever dictators take over, the first thing they do is disarm the citizenry.

I realize this makes me sound like a right wing nut, but I can live with that.
