As anyone knows who has driven along our Southern border knows, the safety of the Mexican trucks is a major problem. Numerous accidents and, literally, parts falling off in the road, are common complaints.

When the pilot program was begun Mexico agreed to manage its own truck fleet and ensure they were safely maintained. If not up to American standards, the promise was made that they would not present a hazard on American roads.

This has not proven to be the case and numerous formal complaints were filed by the Bush Administration on the subject. Also, many Mexican drivers could not read english and thus had a difficult (sometimes dangerous) time navigating around our roads. When stopped, they could not explain their business or needs. Again, numerous complaints were filed.

As for Mexico now acting to implement tariffs, any excuse will do. They are worse off then we are and sinking fast....
