Just had another thought regarding this.

Did you see when one of the small competing sites had a programming error in which you could view private messages on it just by plugging in a message number? Messages were messages, for numbering purposes and only a flag (that wasn't being used) determined whether it was public or private.

Now, that said, would you rather have PM's and public messages sharing code, tables, etc? Basically everything but a flag? That'd kinda worry me. Easier to mess up.
