DR DAVIS: I believe that the concerns re: bleeding from fish oil are terribly overblown. I have never seen a single case of bleeding attributable to fish oil in at least 2000 patients taking it. The literature, such as the study cited by RS, also bears this out.

Prothrombin times (INR) do not reflect the platelet-inhibiting nor anticoagulant effects of aspirin nor fish oil, only that of Coumadin (warfarin).

I am reassured by the lack of bleeding issues in cultures eating plentiful quantities of fish. I have also used high-doses of fish oil for years in people with familial hypertriglyceridemia with not a single episode of abnormal bleeding.

Remember, the sort of blood-thinning effect of fish oil, even in combination with aspirin, is something we want, since heart attack is a blood-clot forming event. There are always risk to balance against the benefits. In the case of fish oil, I believe that the benefits greatly outweigh the minimal risks.
