Editors' Choice December 9, 1999 Intel Shiva LanRover VPN Gateway Plus The Intel product has it all: top performance, elegant server and client installation, and excellent monitoring tools. Not to mention a free firewall.
We were impressed with Intel's new Client Deployment Tool, in beta during our testing, which automates the remote installation of hundreds of clients. No other vendor has attacked the client deployment nightmare as effectively. The user simply clicks on a URL link in an e-mail message and the client software installs and configures itself. Keep in mind, however, that this is a $5,000 option that makes the Intel product the most expensive in the roundup. The Intel Shiva LanRover VPN Gateway Plus's performance was enhanced by Intel's use of Stac compression, pushing it way ahead of the other products we tested.
We also liked the Altiga C10 and award it an honorable mention. The C10 had the best browser-based management, decent performance, and very good monitoring tools. Check Point firewall users will like VPN-1 Gateway, which integrates very well with Fire Wall-1, though its interface is a little intimidating for the uninitiated. None of the products we tested were inadequate. |
