So if as you say, new sprectrum is available in Europe only for UMTS
----------

Greetings Chaz,

This is not correct.

Europe 3G spectrum necessitates application of 3G standard with imt2000 certification.

This includes cdma2000 as specifications evolve. 1xevdo has applied for certification, and should receive same by ITU November meeting... As the standard conforms with imt2000 requirements, approval is most probable. To do otherwise would require a profoundly controversial and entirely political decision that would have profound geopolitical trade ramifications. It would stir dissent among Operators, and the Operators Harmonization Group.

So - it's very likely that 1xevdo will be approved for 3G Europe this year. 1xevdv will follow when the standard is complete. Though if standard work drags out, 1xevdv approval may not happen until as late as Nov. 2002.

Also, language exists mandating that at least one wcdma carrier must exist in each country..... but then alternate flavors could be used... However, who can say how they might react to concrete plans to this effect...
