No insurgency can survive without outside assistance and support. Ledeen provides evidence of Syrian and Iranian support. He also identifies support "from Chechnya, Syria, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Afghanistan, and so on." The intelligence info gathered in the past 45 days must be quite compelling and I doubt Ledeen has done more than scratch the surface. Recall that over 1,000 Green Berets from the 10th Special Forces Group deployed in October. We have had a near news blackout on their activities. I can tell you that these teams are very highly skilled in long range reconaissance, cross-border OPS, and intelligence gathering. The deployment, last week, of a retired four-star with an extensive Special Ops background to do a special study for the Pentagon and SECDEF may turn out to be a much bigger deal than anyone suspected. Ledeen points out that the amount of foreign support going to the insurgents is quite significant. Fledgling Iraqi forces cannot handle it. Something significant must be done. That support line must be cut.
