I asked Alan Engbring (IR) via email the following questions & got the following responses. He responded at 11:54:04 AM (PST) on 12/31/98, so was hard at work on New Year's Eve.

Q1. Any reasons for the recent downdraft from $16 to $12 1/2?

A1. First, we haven't had any news since mid-November and that tends to drive price to some degree. Second, Vical tends to suffer from year-end tax-loss selling, with a pronounced recovery in January. Let's hope that the second part of the pattern holds as well as the first.

Q2. Are the Merck HIV Vaccine Trials still anticipated?

A2. We maintain our expectation for Merck to begin a Phase I safety trial in the relatively near future. Of course, this is out of our control and subject to changing priorities at Merck, but we have received no information from Merck that would suggest they have altered their plans. It remains at the top of our expected events for its anticipated time frame and for its significance.

Q3. Will the Web Site be updated with anticipated 1999 events?

A3. The Web Site is maintained on a regular basis and there is nothing magical about the changing year. We will post new expectations as they occur. In the interim, the existing list continues to reflect our current expectations. You may notice that none of these expectations carries a target date and some (patents & collaborations) are of a recurring nature that keeps them on the list for as long as additional potential exists.
