#2 is the most likely to continue as no one seems to be seeking #4. The only plausible way to reach solution #4, imho, is for the goal of the state of Israel to change from "being a Jewish state" to "being a state were Jews can live freely and safely". The one-state option for Israel & Palestine was actually the most popular among both Israelis and Palestinians until the current intifada. The governments and special interest groups would not have their interests advanced by such a solution, so the conflict drags on.

Unfortunately no one sees the other alternative. If it were not for Muslim Extremists, Palestine could be as bountiful and modern as Israel as could Lebanon. It would be an advantage to Israel to have Palestine a rich and prosperous and peaceful country. Imagine if the aid given to Hamas for weapons or to Hezbollah had been spent on making the lives of Palestinians and the Lebanese richer and more productive. Imagine if the families of suicide bombers had the money to decide not to allow their children to blow themselves up. Israel and it's settlers are no different than Canada. The Israelis displaced the Palestinians, and the Canadians displaced the First Nations. And just like Canadians are not going back to Europe, so the Israelis are not leaving Israel. Should Canadians discuss living under a FN government? Of Course not. Given the behavior of the Palestinians, thier election of Hamas as government and their stated desire to drive the Jews into the Sea, the only situation as I see it is to kill all of the members of Hamas and Hezbollah. I prefer the "send out the assassins and kill them one at a time at night route", but sooner or later we will have to kill anyone who follows the path of Jihad. Personally I hope they start at the top and work their way down.
