Stephen,

I think I know more about the politics of the Middle East than you suppose. I'm really glad you brought up the Chamberlain policy of appeasement. Who is being appeased here? Recently we saw Israel blow up Gaza's infrastructure and lead them to the brink of a humanitarian crisis. No word from Bush, who knows in this mid-term election year he needs the pro-Israel lobby and all its powerful aid. So then we have Israel blow up Lebanon's infrastructure and kill many civilians in the process ("stuff" happens). No matter that short of a catastrophic civil war that even then would probably still not decide anything, the Lebanese government is too weak to control Hezbollah. What is next, now we have the US and now Canada politically protecting and justifying this selfish, craven aggression, which damages the security of the whole world. Syria, Iran? Eight Canadians killed today. Where will this end? No one is justifying attacks on Israelis. When will we stop justifying attacks on innocent Lebanese and Palestinians? Israel is so strong economically and militarily it certainly does not need our help, it just needs serious counselling on how to keep this power under control.
