Is he trying to force his views on others or just stating what he personally believes? Perhaps what he was saying was simply that he doesn't want to see this issue blow up on him. Or something more thoughtful and subtle, like what has been expressed on this thread where marriage becomes the provenance of religion and the state manages civil partnerships, which would be the vehicle for conveying legal rights. It doesn't necessarily imply that he disapproves of gay family relationships.
