The Board of Supervisors will consider a proposal today to ban smoking in the city's public parks, squares, gardens and playing fields.

The measure, sponsored by Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier, calls for exempting golf courses and piers from the prohibition. The board, however, may amend the ordinance to include golf courses after all.

Backers of the smoking restrictions have cited health risks associated with secondhand smoke and the litter caused by discarded cigarette butts to argue their position. Opponents say cracking down on smoking in the great outdoors goes too far.

If the legislation is approved, scofflaw smokers would be subject to fines ranging from $100 to $500.
