I guess we will have one of our rare disagreements on this. I don't believe the apathetic should be forced from their couches any more than any behavior should be dictated by the govt. That's intrusion by any name.

By setting an example, I meant in the home. Volunteerism was a part of our homelife when I was growing up. My parents raised me to believe I should help others. I worked with a developmentally delayed child in high school, biking to his house every day to help his mom do patterning with him, moving his legs and arms over and over, trying to get his body to go through the crawling stage, which he'd skipped. Huge influence on me. Eventually the entire cheerleading squad did it- we would pattern, and then go practice. IN college, I volunteered at a school for children with cerebral palsy, then as a Big Sister for an at-risk teen. As Lane said it fit well with my psych. major and I choose to do it. I think I would have hated being told I HAD to to graduate.

I will say that our high school approves just about any form of service and it's your choice. The boys had about 300 hours each because of their intensive work with model UN. Their band also did a couple of benefit concerts for families in crisis. But these were things they would have done, required or not. And because they weren't forced to, I think they will be more likely to continue volunteering their talents when they can.
