When I was in military school in central Texas in the late '60s, we'd be taken once or twice a year to Ft. Hood for training. As part of it, we'd observe soldiers demolish old tanks using wire-guided rockets. You must have been one of those guys. It was very cool.

They'd never let us teenagers do it, though.

Afterwards, we would insert firing pins in our parade M-1s, then take us to Camp Bullit to fire them on a range. One half of the group would shoot while the other half raised and lowered the targets while in a trench. If the other guy missed, we'd wave red flag over his target. I'll always remember waiting for the first shot to come my way, thinking about what could happen if it ricocheted the wrong way. After the first shot, everything was OK.

We'd often wave the red flags regardless of accuracy just to harass our buddies.
