Just curious what you do think is the best OS in this day and age

UNIX

And after you answer that question, is that OS the best OS for all environments (desktop; workgroup; servers; enterprise)?

Desktop
For a average home computer users who just wants to run applications and doesn't want to be a system administrator then there is no good OS for this day and age. For some reason ever other home consumer device is simple and easy to use but when it comes to computer they make life difficult for them. I can see the NC has a good shot at taking away MS monopoly here.

Power user - UNIX or LINUX but if you have to use a off the self program that's not available then you can't use it.

Workgroup
MS has a monopoly here so your pretty much locked into MS. It's not the best but that's all you have.

Servers and enterprise systems UNIX.

Secondly, is the replacement for MS OS's truly here?

Just recently MS say it would stop licensing its OS to a large hardware computer company if it bundles LINUX on its systems.
I hear LINUX is gaining market share but it's very difficult to break a monopoly when they have this kind of power.

Its fine to talk about Java as a replacement,

Well it's going to be a struggle since MS has a monopoly and it understands that Java and the NC is a threat to their monopoly.
Most companies don't care about what's good for the consumer but what's good for their pocket books so it will be a hard battle

Here is a few reasons why Java has a chance.

Java is going to be ISO certified. That means it will be open for any ISV. The problem with MS is that its OS is partly open and they use it to control ISV. If you are not obeying MS they withhold new release info.

Technology moves along at a fast pace so the limitations presently encountered today will not be there tomorrow.
