Most parents I meet these days are very concerned about the safety of toys.

Their problem is the limited selection and where to find the safest, not made in China toys, not to mention the cost. That 'treehouse with crows nest' retails around $160 and does not come with anything. Adding the costs of the gnomes and little bits of furniture brings it quickly to over $200 - rather expensive for many families and probably not one of the toys on their child's "Santa list". We are certainly running into that problem. A granddaughter wants an American Girl doll (Mattel) and we cannot find any similar doll to substitute. Will she understand why Santa did not give her THAT doll?

Time to rethink where we put the emphasis of Christmas ...

I hope my grandchildren will be happy with a wooden hoop & stick, Jacob's ladder, cork gun, and other American made 'colonial era' toys I purchased on a recent trip to the Gift Shop at the Brandywine Battlefield. The trip yielded a great, though limited, selection of gifts for all ages and at reasonable prices.

Another trip to the gift shop at Longwood Gardens yielded everything made in China except the plants and some candy. There were more lookers than buyers - could the country of origin be partly to blame?

The keyboard I'm typing on right now was MADE IN CHINA - so I am signing off for tonight!

Merry
