According to JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, "A weapon using airborne tularemia would likely result three to five days later in an outbreak of acute, undifferentiated febrile illness with incipient pneumonia, pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lung) and hilar lymphadenopathy (enlargement of the lymph nodes). Without treatment, the clinical course could progress to respiratory failure, shock and death."
A World Health Organization (WHO) expert committee estimated that an aerosol dispersal of 50 kg of virulent F tularensis over a metropolitan area with 5 million inhabitants would result in 250,000 incapacitating casualties, including 19,000 deaths. Illness would be expected to persist for several weeks and disease relapses to occur during the ensuing weeks or months. Referring to this model, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently examined the expected economic impact of bioterrorist attacks and estimated the total base costs to society of an F tularensis aerosol attack to be $5.4 billion for every 100,000 persons exposed.
