"My experience is that fewer vendor boxes and fewer vendor interfaces almost always reduces complexity, reduces overall cost, and, increases performance"

That would be the obvious conclusion. So as long as the customer feels that they are not overpaying for one-vendor solution and that they are getting the Best-Of-Breed or at least close to the best-of-breed technology from one vendor, WHY would they choose to deal with 3 or 4 different vendors who would likely point fingers at each other whenever an intractable problem arises in their network?

Besides, one thing about being an incumbent heavyweight is that Telco manager never gets fired for buying from one vendor like NT whereas if they try to source multiple vendors & the resulting deployment blows up........there goes the job. CSCO uses credibility/incumbency advantage to the max in the enterprise world and I am assuming NT is trying to achieve the same level of traction/reputation in the Carrier market.
