you've mentioned steve gibson and his marvelous work. and we've been touching on zip drives here today as well. for those who may not be aware, gibson is also the creator of the trouble in paradise (tip) zip & jaz drive and cartridge testing system grc.com using tip i discovered a faulty jaz disk and returned it to iomega for a new free replacement. i don't know about zip disks, but jaz disks have lifetime warranties. the jaz disks are on the pricey side... about $80 each if you buy a 3-pack (although i once lucked out and bought one for $65). gibson is great. i also have his optout program on my desktop and run the scan from time to time. grc.com :) mark
