You are absolutely right about that. The Volkswagen Jetta already does that, just on its diesel engine. I think that to some extent the Volt was a publicity play by GM. Now they are stuck with it and have to make it work. I wouldn't consider buying one until several years' of production have been assessed by Consumer Reports. I think it's more likely now that GM will just go bankrupt, or at least shrink terrifically.
