========================= 1999 Outlook For China's Computer Manufacturers
(2/5/1999) The following is a forecast for the Chinese computer manufacturing sector for 1999, published in the December 15 Zhongguo Dianzi Bao (China Electronics).
The gross industrial output in the electronics and information technology sectors, which are reported as a single sector in China, is expected to grow 21% this year to RMB 581 billion (US$70 bln). Value added is estimated at RMB 84 bln (US$10.1 bln), up 14%. Sales revenues are estimated at RMB 360 bln (US$43.4 bln), up 16%. Exports are estimated at RMB 28 bln (US$3.4 bln), up 3%. And profits plus tax payments are estimated at RMB 26 bln (US$3.1 bln), up 13%.
The sector faces many problems, such as slack demand and weak export growth. Its 1999 goals are to meet production growth rates of 20%, maintain profitability and improve product offerings. In 1998, the sector continued to grow, particularly in the second half of the year.
The sector had gross output for the first 10 months of 1998 of RMB 415.6 billion (US$50 bln), a 32% increase over the same period in 1997. This represented an increase of 14% or RMB 54.9 bln (US$6.6 bln) over the previous year. Sales increased RMB 239.7 bln (US$28.9 bln), a 16% increase. The industry paid taxes of RMB 16 bln (US$2 bln), a 3% increase. It achieved RMB 10 bln (US$1.2 bln) in profits—a 4% drop.
Computers and accessories
The computer market continues to grow. New manufacturers entered the field last year and established players continued to expand, creating fierce competition.
Finance, insurance, accounting, tax, foreign trade, domestic trade, water and power departments will continue to increase computer usage, which will result in increased commercial computer sales this year.
Home PC sales are also expected to grow. New educational software and other software products have emerged and computer bandwidth costs have dropped. Domestic demand is estimated at 6 million units, with sales exceeding RMB 50 bln (US$6 bln), a 35% increase over 1998. Revenue for software and services is expected to reach RMB 40 bln (US$4.8 bln), up 30% from 1998.
Internet development will continue. E-mail, online services and service providers have all gained users this year. The e-commerce market is also beginning to develop.
