I live in about 1800 sq. ft and my electric bill runs $200 a month during summer.. and this is after i have upgraded air conditioning unit, and put sun shields (3m plastic) on windows. I live out side philly. peco is not cheap...

I do not understand how so many can die from the heat.. We have them die here also but it because the windows are closed and no fans and no one to check up on them... My wife due to brain tumor cannot tolerate temperatures outside of a range from 68 to 74.. her body temperature will drop or increase if not for heating or cooling systems.. Of course you have power failures... Cold compress will bring down the body temperature and plenty of water... I have gone for one or two days without air conditioning during 90 degrees weather and using cold compress on her and it brought us through.. I still wonder where were the children of the people, the neighbors , the church. It seems the whole system breaks down and no one is looking after the elderly, the sick who are home bound.

We may not be the friendliest of neighbors but our cities do have emergency plans to check on elderly, and the sick when the heat gets too high or cold gets bad.. We bring them to shelters, or we visit them frequently... It seems parts of Eu. has some work to do in this area... In my mind it is not correct to blame not having air conditioning units for these massive deaths.
