Van,
I'll ramble a little... I was a little disappointed at the price drop yesterday but figure it was "sell before the news" because Apple has dropped after good news in the past. I assume the price drops after the news partly because people had only gotten in to trade the pre-news rush, and because either the news wasn't good enough or not going to happen soon enough. Like the keynote with the board changes and Microsoft money, was not about news that would effect the company soon enough. If the news today and at earnings is good, the price may move up, though.
I have April options and I have leaps. I will trade them if there is sufficient incentive; otherwise I will hold till the earnings news.
I think this might be a tricky month because there is the expectation of some news. The majority of this thread is guessing on it being very good news. If it's not, a short position could work very well. If you think the earnings news will not be strong, a short position should be taken before the earnings announcement, don't you think?
Jobs will pull something out of his hat for today's meeting and it will be something he thinks is good. Will the marketplace agree? When he announced the Apple Online Store, the Street was lukewarm, and the stock price dropped, yet the Apple Store has done very well for Apple indeed and has been a big asset.
Please keep me posted on your thoughts.
Oh, I just read the post about a news station in LA mentioning that Disney is considering buying Apple. I wasn't taking this rumor seriously, and am not sure I do yet, but if it is making the news, I'd tread carefully about shorting, just in case. I remember writing calls on 1/3 of my position in the most important stock in my portfolio. I would have been okay if a buyout wasn't announced. My broker said I was mugged. I bought them back at the sort of loss your worst nightmares couldn't imagine. I wasn't lucky enough to have heard any rumors of that buyout.
Since you haven't read this thread, I'll tell you that before the rumor about Disney buying Apple surfaced, I heard a rumor that originated in Switzerland that Disney was buying Pixar. Long live the World Wide Web. :-) (Before anyone jumps on me, allow me to disclaim: I am quoting this rumor without comment and am not endorsing it.)
