If the Israelis, the Euros, the Americans, and a significant portion of the Palestinians all push in unison, then Arafat may be in the kind of corner he usually squeezes out of. He'll dodge and delay and lie to all sides, like he always does. The hard point for Arafat this time is that Abu Mazen will not consent to pure fig leaf reform. He may have little power, but he will have it. Sharon said recently of Abu Mazen, "he understands that Israel cannot be defeated by terror". I hope it's true, for then Abu Mazen would really try to chart a different course than the failed intifada. This fight over disarming Al Aqsa sounds like he is trying, but is unlikely to succeed.
