That's almost the way I remember it, although the flavor I got was that the US was more along the lines of deliberately allowing itself to be snookered or looking the other way, more like "wink-wink-say-no-more." Definitely not assisting actively.

That's pretty much it, I think.

I recall that the Pakistanis were airlifted out of a pocket of beseiged Talibs and AQ in one of the northern towns - Mazar?
