Any comments on recent news release from GigaLabs on its Jigsaw storage networking switch? Article published yesterday (26 Jan) and found on its web site:

gigalabs.com

According to the article, "The Jigsaw storage networking switch is aimed at meeting the requirement of today's data center for high-performance mass storage solutions. Building upon its unique portfolio of gigabit switching technologies, GigaLabs has reinvigorated SCSI technology by migrating from shared to switched topologies and bypassing protocol translation. . . . Along with the switched topology approach, GigaLabs is also introducing long-distance SCSI options that enable high-speed remote mirroring, remote backup, and remote clustering."

The article carries some comments from Harry Mason, Chairman, SCSI Trade Association: "GigaLabs' Jigsaw technology enables users to expand their SCSI applications considerably. SCSI has lived through many changes in the industry. The power of the legacy should not be underestimated."

And comments from Adaptec's Advanced Technology Group vice president Robert D. Selinger: "Jigsaw is a real breakthrough for SCSI technology. By using standard SCSI devices and interfaces, Jigsaw requires no new infrastructure investments. This will enable Adaptec customers to leverage their investments in existing SCSI technology and achieve new capabilities in their enterprise data storage systems."

Granted, we are not talking about the home computer market but servers for corporations. But Jigsaw looks like it could extend SCSI capabilities somewhat. Think it will have any effect on the SCSI business? This is a press release, of course, not an analysis of the product or prospects and therefore I treat it as marketing hype as well as information.

I hadn't heard of GigaLabs before. According to its published company info, it is privately held.
